This well-illustrated website produced by the Government of British Columbia provides a great deal of information on how to stop smoking and about the negative effects of second-hand smoke. Smokers will discover why tobacco is so addictive and what options are available to help them quit. Parents and teachers will also find advice about various ways of addressing young people and tobacco.

The Stop Smoking Center
Offered by V-CC, a Toronto-based company that develops and supports community-based interactive disease management programs, the Stop Smoking Center provides many tools to the smoker seeking relief from cigarettes. He or she will find information on the amount of time and money saved since quitting, and will also will learn how to set objectives and will be able to receive messages of support if necessary.

Test de Fagerström

Fagerström's Test
This test, developed by the Swedish psychologist Karl Fagerström, evaluates your level of nicotine dependence with six easy questions. E-Quit
Lauched by Health Canada in 2002, E-Quit is a support service which allows smokers to receive motivational emails 20 days prior to the quit date they have set for themselves. Once the chosen date has passed, they can continue to receive daily motivational messages for eight weeks. Also, a whole section of the Health Canada website focuses on quitting smoking.

Quit to Win Challenge

Quit to Win Challenge
This famous smoking cessation contest is organized every year by Acti-Menu. Its website is available all year round, and features a discussion forum, advice from doctors, tips on maintaining your ideal weight, as well as general information on tobacco and health. Right before the Quit to Win Challenge registration period, from late January to early February, smokers who wish to sign up can do so online. 

Health Canada

Designed for teenagers, this interactive website helps smokers find the necessary motivation to quit. Once enrolled, they can choose to receive telephone calls or emails that help with managing stress and maintaining a positive attitude.

Zyban net

Zyban net
Intended for users of bupropion, a prescription medication, Zyban net is a complement to the information the company already offers about the medication. Created by the Biovail pharmaceutical company, the website teaches smokers to create their own quit strategy and how to avoid giving in to cravings, while offering information on Zyban and its side effects.

The Canadian Lung Association
The Lung Association' s website features a comprehensive section on smoking, including the five stages of quit readiness model, as well as presenting the common obstacles and advantages of giving up cigarettes. The Quebec division of the Association suggests a few ticks for succesfull quitting.

Nicoderm

Your Journey to Success (by Nicoderm)
This personalized support program, offered by the Johnson & Johnson Company, allows you to register for support in dealing with nicotine withdrawal. The site presents a six-step strategy for overcoming dependence, a savings calculator, and information on the Nicoderm product line.

Habitrol

Habitrol Support Program
This online program, offered by pharmaceutical company Novartis, allows Habitrol nicotine patch users to sign up for 11 weeks worth of motivational emails. The site also includes advice on staying smoke-free.

I Quit! - CDC

US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
The CDC in Atlanta (Georgia), a well known US government agency, provides a great deal of useful advice on quitting. Smokers learn how to quit and are directed towards other smoking cessation programs.

Ligne J'arrête

The "J'arrête" Line (1-866-527-7383)
Since 2002, the Smokers' Helpline offers support for the needs and difficulties of quitting smoking.  Available from 8 am to 9 pm on Monday through Thursday, and 8 am to 8 pm on Fridays, the Helpline is funded by the Quebec government and is operated by the Canadian Cancer Society and the Quebec Council on Tobacco and Health.

Quebec Lung Association

Poumon-9 Line (1 888 768-6669 ext. 232)
This phone service for smokers, their families and friends has been active since 1999. It is a free resource for those who wish to quit and is staffed by health professionals specialized in tobacco issues. It receives calls Monday to Friday, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

A bilingual, confidential and anonymous help line which offers information, referrals and support for all drug addiction problems, including nicotine. Offered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 1 800 265-2626, or 514 527-2626 in the Greater Montreal area.

NicoDerm Line (1-866-311-5659)
This help line operated by NicoDerm patch manufacturers Johnson and Johnson offers information on their products and on the various steps of withdrawal. 

Nicorette

Nicorette Line (1-866-311-5655)
Also from Johnson and Johnson, the Nicorette line offers support and information to users of this particular nicotine replacement therapy. Those who wish to receive information on the nicotine inhaler should dial 1 866 311-5606.

Ligne Zyban

Zyban Net help Line (1-800-489-8424)
Offered by Biovail, this line dispenses information on Zyban, a prescription-only medication. Operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Zyban users can also choose to receive information by mail during their projected period of withdrawal. 

Ligne Habitrol

Habitrol Help Line (1-888-227-5777)
Specially-trained nurses and pharmacists answer questions about the nicotine patch and also offer a personalized consultation based on individual progress. From 8 am to 10 pm Monday to Friday.

Quit Smoking Centres (QSC)
Established in 2003 and available in every region of Quebec, Quit Smoking Centres offer individual or group counselling to smokers who would like help during their quitting process.  Centres also offer information and documentation on the subject of tobacco and nicotine dependence. The Centres are usually found in local CLSCs and services are free.  In order to find the QSC closest to you, click here or call 1-866-527-7383.

One Step at a Time
A series of guides produced by the Canadian Cancer Society for helping smokers quit. The section entitled “Why Should I Quit?” lists the types of cancer which most affect smokers, the benefits of quitting smoking and suggests different means of quitting.

Massachusetts Tobacco Control Program
Considered one of the most comprehensive smoking cessation programs in the world, the state of Massachussetts hosts its own website on quitting smoking.

Presented by the Institute of Social and Preventative Medicine of the University of Geneva in Switzerland, Stop-tabac offers a series of brochures and documents for those who are thinking about quitting or who have already decided to give up their cigarettes. The various stages of the withdrawal process are explained by a series of available Powerpoint presentations.
